AROME

Operator: Meteo-France

AROME is the high-resolution convection-permitting model from Meteo-France with 1.3 km resolution. It covers France and adjacent areas, including the Western Alps, and directly resolves convective processes.

Limitations

• No upper-level wind – falls back to 10m wind (no summit wind calculation)
• No separate snowfall/rain – snow is reconstructed via the fallback algorithm
• No weather code – excluded from WMO voting
• Weight $w = 2.0$ (high resolution compensates for missing variables)

Strengths

• Excellent for local precipitation forecasts in the Western Alps
• 1.3 km grid captures narrow valleys and expositions
