The Global Forecast System is the primary global forecast model of the USA with 0.25° resolution (~25 km) and a forecast range of up to 16 days. It is computed four times daily.
Role in the Ensemble
- Third source for freezing level (alongside ICON EU and ICON D2)
- Provides the longest forecast range (16 days)
- Lower weight () due to coarser resolution in the Alpine region
- Full variable set including upper-level wind
